40 years ago…

40 years ago tomorrow, The crew of Apollo 11 headed off from Cape Canaveral to the moon. The video below is a screenprint of the televised launch at 9:32AM EDT July 16, 1969, and what many of us sat and watched on our TV sets.

The Saturn V rocket is still the most powerful rocket built, and in watching this launch, no one should think that, despite the passage of time, the process of leaving this planet is anything but extraordinary.

40 years ago, I was a third year university student, soon to be heading back for several more years at Queen’s and the University of Guelph.
